It follows the story of two families, the Keatings and the Cousins, whose lives become inextricably linked in the early 1960’s, on the day that Beverley and Fix Keating christen their youngest daughter Franny.
Bert Cousins, a young lawyer from the DAs office, turns up uninvited to local cop, Fix Keating’s house, bearing a large bottle of gin in lieu of an invitation to the christening party. Everyone gets drunk, Bert kisses the beautiful Beverley and 10 lives are changed forever.
What unfolds is a story that intertwines the lives of four adults and six children over five decades. Commonwealth is one of those books that you want to speed read to find out what happens whilst simultaneously wanting it to slow it down so it lasts for longer!
