Women of Impact | Introducing Rosie Nixon

Women Of Impact: Q&A With Rosie Nixon

Your career spans journalism, broadcasting, and publishing. What has been the most surprising lesson you’ve learned along the way?

In recent years, I have become so much more comfortable with the idea of reinventing aspects of life when they are no longer working for me. I used to feel as though my career was a huge part of my identity, but since relinquishing my role editing HELLO! I have embarked on my greatest career chapter yet. It was hard one after a near brush with burnout, but I really believe the challenging times are the moments that make us. It’s not easy to feel that when you’re going through it, but if you build in time for recovery and proper, honest reflection, you will always emerge more brightly than before - like a butterfly from a chrysalis!

As Editor-in-Chief at Hello! You’ve helped shape how we see women in the public eye. What does responsible storytelling mean to you?

I always felt a huge responsibility as an editor of such a large national magazine to ensure we were portraying balanced, diverse and impactful stories of women doing great things on our platforms. Personalities place a huge amount of trust in a media brand when opening up about personal aspects of their life, and I never took that trust for granted. Taking a kind approach is essential to my philosophy around reporting, which doesn’t mean you can’t tackle hard-hitting subjects or ask difficult questions, but you can do it in a safe and trusted environment.

I was particularly proud of my work at HELLO! around raising the profile of perimenopause and menopause in the media, when we launched The Menopause Workplace Pledge campaign in partnership with the charity Wellbeing of Women, for whom I am proud to be an ambassador. I think that if you have access to any kind of platform, then it is your duty to use it to help amplify the stories of women, as if you help even just one person feel better seen and supported, then you are winning.

Aspiga is rooted in conscious consumerism and ethical fashion. What role does sustainability play in your day-to-day choices?

Sustainability has always played a part in my daily choices, and increasingly so. Wherever I can swap in more eco-conscious choices, I will - like the new Eco Dishwasher sheets I have recently discovered from Dip, they are brilliant and far more gentle on the planet. I have become extremely mindful of where I shop for fashion, searching for the B-Corp logo wherever possible, so I know there is an acceptable standard of due diligence.

Whilst becoming more aware about where I am shopping has undoubtedly made me spend less on fashion overall, I am prepared to splurge on pieces I really love and where there is no compromise on quality, which is, of course, why I return to Aspiga time and time again!

You’ve worked closely with some of the world’s most high-profile women, what do the most impactful ones have in common?

The most impactful women I know all share the key traits of an immense personal passion for what they do, a positive mindset and a strong drive to support others. This comes from a deep understanding of who they are and a genuine desire to make the world a better place. Those are the people who epitomise genuine ‘success’.

If you could go back and whisper a bit of advice to your 25-year-old self, what would it be?

I would say that, remember that, at the end of the day, giving love and being loved is all that really matters. Whether that is love for your family, the love of great friends, love for your work and the impact it will have on others, and the love for yourself, faults and all. When things get busy, boil it back down to love. Oh and tequila will never agree with you, so forget it. Other than that, you are enough and you are loved. Have lots of fun.
