What Happens Before you Wear It: Journey of a Block Print Dress
The Journey of a Block Print Dress
Every Aspiga piece has a story long before it reaches your wardrobe. Behind the colour, craftsmanship and design lies a thoughtful journey – from responsibly sourced materials to the skilled hands of artisans who bring each garment to life.
To understand what really happens before you wear it, let’s follow the journey of one of our favourite pieces: a hand block-printed organic cotton dress.
Step 1: Starting with Organic Cotton
The journey begins with the fabric. Many of our block print dresses are made using soft organic cotton, a natural fibre grown without harmful chemicals. Choosing organic cotton helps protect soil, air and water while supporting healthier farming communities.
Once sourced, the cotton fabric is sent to our production partners in India, where it is prepared for the printing process.

Step 2: Creating the Wooden Printing Blocks
Before any fabric can be printed, the pattern must first be carved into wooden blocks.
Each design is hand-carved by skilled craftsmen, and because each colour requires its own block, several blocks are needed for a single pattern. Carving the blocks alone can take up to 20 days to complete.
This careful process ensures every print has depth, character and individuality.

Step 3: Preparing the Dyes
Colour is a defining part of block print design. Before printing begins, dyes are carefully mixed by hand.
Preparing these dyes can take up to three days, ensuring the colours are rich and vibrant when applied to the fabric.
Printing is often done in smaller batches to maintain quality and reduce waste, reflecting a slower and more mindful approach to fashion production.

Step 4: Hand Block Printing the Fabric
Once everything is ready, the printing process begins.
Using the carved wooden blocks, artisans press the design onto the fabric one colour at a time. Each piece of fabric is printed carefully by hand, creating the intricate patterns that make block print garments so distinctive.
Because this process is entirely manual, no two prints are ever identical, giving every garment its own character.

Step 5: Crafting the Garment
After printing, the fabric moves to the tailoring stage.
Rather than using a fast production line, each seamstress works on one full garment at a time, allowing them to carefully control print placement and ensure every detail is just right.
This slower approach supports craftsmanship and gives artisans a sense of ownership over the pieces they create.

Step 6: The Final Piece
Once complete, the finished dress is carefully inspected and prepared for delivery. Styles such as the Florrie skirt and Margaritte combine artisan printing techniques with thoughtful design features like shirred waists, fabric-covered buttons and soft organic cotton fabric.
These details ensure each product is both beautiful and comfortable to wear.

Step 7: Carefully Packaged for Delivery
The final step in the journey is getting the dress from the workshop to your wardrobe.
Each garment is prepared for shipment using Aspiga’s sustainable packaging, ensuring the piece arrives safely while minimising environmental impact.
From the raw cotton to the final package, every stage reflects Aspiga’s commitment to responsible production and slow fashion.
